The doctor
Dr Dimitra Mela was born in Heraklion and lives with her family in Agios Nikolaos. She graduated with distinction from the University of Crete School of Medicine and completed her pediatric residency at the Venizeleio General Hospital of Heraklion, where she went on to serve as an attending pediatrician.
She has trained at medical centres in the USA, Germany and Switzerland, is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a certified infant massage instructor (IAIM), with postgraduate training in pediatric nutrition and a special clinical interest in pediatric allergy.
On holiday in Crete with children?
The practice regularly sees visiting families from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and the wider Lasithi region — for sudden fevers, ear pain after swimming, rashes, stomach upsets and everything else that doesn't wait for the holiday to end. Consultations are held in English, and the practice is about 15 minutes' drive from Elounda.

A practice designed for children
The clinic interior won the BIG SEE Interior Design Award 2026 and was designed around children: hypoallergenic materials, thoughtfully planned waiting areas, an interactive "magic wall" to play on, and a private breastfeeding room for mothers.
